Request for support for the memorandum demanding a moratorium on the exploration and exploitation of uranium in Quebec.

Letter

Memorandum

To all environmentalist groups of Québec.
To the deputy of Labelle, Mr Sylvain Pagé,
To the deputy of Gatineau Labelle, Mrs Johanne Deschamps,
To all town councils of the Laurentides, Pontiac and of the MRC Antoine-Labelle.
To all socio-economic groups of the MRC Antoine-Labelle.
To all citizens of Québec, particularly of the MRCs Antoine-Labelle and Pontiac.

Ladies, Gentlemen :

The Uranium Committee of the APEHL ( Association for the Protection of the Environment of the Upper-Laurentians) has just finalized its editing of a memorandum to demand a moratorium from the government of Québec on the exploration and exploitation of uranium throughout the territory of Quebec . In this memorandum, we describe the environmental, socio-economic and ethical impacts that the development of this industry involves. It is the first link in a chain leading to the nuclear industry, both civil and military.

The environmental stakes described in this memorandum are too serious to become an object of partisan politics. A large number of studies show that known and probable risks of uranium mining are real to the point that no one can ignore. Although the problems related to the nuclear industry are often reported in the mass media, their parallel activities are just as harmful to the environment.

We are conscious of the environmental stakes we are presently facing, i.e. global warming due to the greenhouse effect. However, the activities linked to uranium mining are particularly polluting and represent risks just as important to the health of citizens. At this time, we possess all the tools and technology needed to create and invent other types of energy able to provide for our needs without endangering the health and wellbeing of other citizens. Other options should be explored, for the good of all.

You will find enclosed a copy of the memorandum that we invite you to read.. This document contains not only information but takes a position in relation to uranium mining. If you agree with this demand, we invite you to write and send us a letter of support.

As soon as we receive an interesting critical mass of support, we will file this memorandum with the Québec National Assembly. This is to sensitize all political parties and all ministries concerned: the Prime Minister, the Minister of Sustainable Development, the Minister of the Environment and Parks of Québec and the Minister of Natural Resources and Wildlife of Quebec.

We thank you for your interest and participation.
